Senior Vice President of Development

This position will lead our Development team and will drive and oversee the general strategy and the day-to-day management of our development work.

Drawing upon an extensive knowledge base, we develop, finance, engineer, build, own, and operate high quality utility-scale photovoltaic projects and battery energy storage projects. Our Development team is looking for a talented SVP of Development to be the department’s leader and sponsor to support the efforts of our fast-growing company. Adapture Renewables is owned by KIRKBI – the private holding and investment company of the Kirk Kristiansen family founded to build a sustainable future for the LEGO® brand through generations.

Overview

This position will lead our Development team and will drive and oversee the general strategy and the day-to-day management of our development work. This position will report to the Chief Executive Officer and supervise the regional development leaders and their staff. The ideal candidate will be located near our Oakland office, but we will consider a candidate who works remotely depending on experience, skill set, and cultural fit.

Core Responsibilities

  • Work with the C-Suite and Board of Directors to set and manage annual goals and continue to build a development team capable of supporting the future needs of the business.
  • Post significant and continual growth to the development pipeline and, ultimately, the project backlog.
  • Continually be reassessing the US competitive landscape, forecast changes, and help to identify opportunities for utility-scale renewable projects.
  • Manage and coordinate the Development team’s efforts (including those of support consultants) with respect to market assessments, site control, interconnection, environmental/permitting, and pre-construction engineering.
  • Effectively lead a team in a dynamically evolving project environment with numerous projects at different development stages. Calibrate the pace of project development in accordance with leadership’s objectives. Creatively and nimbly address and solve project-level challenges to adhere to established schedules.
  • Orchestrate consistent and reliable budgets and schedules for all projects in the development pipeline.
  • Skillfully assess the drivers and results of project valuation models and related financial scenarios to provide insights regarding value-creating investment opportunities to the C-Suite and Board of Directors.
  • Consistently make efficient, thorough, transparent, and risk-assessed investment recommendations to the company’s leadership team.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of 12-15 years of project development experience in the US renewable energy industry.
  • Experience managing a multi-region organization focused on large utility-scale solar project development (complete development cycle).
  • Project development experience in multiple ISOs / RTOs across the US.
  • A working and fundamental understanding of the interconnection process across multiple markets.
  • For utility-scale projects, must be able to demonstrate considerable negotiation and execution experience with interconnection agreements and power purchase agreements.
  • In addition, the ideal candidate will have battery energy storage development experience – both hybrid and stand-alone systems.
  • Candidate must be well versed in common real estate workflows and have significant transactional experience in this area.
  • Experience negotiating directly with landowners and local officials to obtain site agreements, tax abatements, and use and other local pre-construction permits.
  • Candidate must be a cultural fit that views leadership as a service to those employees reporting to the position and operates with and instills in others a high degree of collaboration and transparency.
  • Strong leadership and team building skills with experience mentoring, training, growing, and motivating a broad range of talent.
  • Effective interpersonal communication, problem solving, and diplomacy skills. Has excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills. Extensive experience managing hybrid/remote teams.
  • Is a collaborative and patient leader with strong emotional intelligence.
  • Capable of leading the Development team’s annual financial budget process and subsequent quarterly reviews.
  • Must have created from scratch or improved an existing bonus plan for a development team. Experience managing employees in different states and working with cross-functional teams. Must have worked in large and small organizations.
  • Up to 40% travel. Part of managing remote teams will be spending time in person in the regions to bring people together and ensure they feel like a part of the organization.
  • Bachelor’s degree, with engineering or business major preferred. Master’s degree highly valued.
