Transmission Manager

This position will be responsible for transmission planning and generation interconnection functions, including but not limited to working with consultants on generation deliverability studies and interconnection applications and submitting interconnection applications.

The position may be based remotely in the U.S. (preference for major metro area with airport access nearby) with periodic travel to our Oakland, California office or based in the Bay Area. Overview

This position will be responsible for transmission planning and generation interconnection functions, including but not limited to working with consultants on generation deliverability studies and interconnection applications and submitting interconnection applications and maintaining relationships with transmission utilities and/or ISOs. The position will work with our Business Development team, whose near-term focus involves expanding our utility-scale, solar PV and solar + storage project portfolio via acquisitions and greenfield development throughout the U.S. This position will report to the Director of Interconnection and Transmission.

Core Responsibilities

  • Perform interconnection project management, communicating the schedule and budgetary milestone requirements for projects going through the interconnection process.
  • Support the company’s power generation project development, acquisition, and operations activities in the area of electric transmission/interconnection.
  • Assist in developing strategies to select new project sites and evaluate opportunities with transmission-relate.d work to ensure each project has sufficient transmission availability for project competitiveness
  • Perform interconnection project management, communicating the schedule and budgetary milestone requirements for projects going through the interconnection process.
  • Coordinate, review, and interpret interconnection and transmission studies (short circuit, transient stability, and load flow) performed by utilities and outside consultants.
  • Provide assessment of grid interconnection to support due diligence activities, such as LMP, congestion risk, curtailment risks, basis risks, etc.
  • Participate in negotiating interconnect and study agreements with the relevant ISO, RTO and TO (multiple study agreements, ISA, CSA, and GIA).
  • Estimate network upgrade costs and allocations based on the relevant ISO interconnection process.
  • Follow key ISO/RTO stakeholder processes and provide inputs to the team on key policy issues.
  • Provide technical support for project development and acquisition activities in the evaluation of transmission system issues within the various ISOs/RTOs
  • Provide interconnection support for the company’s operating generation projects
  • Develop thorough understanding and evaluation of potential interconnection alternatives for various projects, and the corresponding costs, benefits, and challenges for each alternative

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of 4 years of transmission planning experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Must be well organized and eager to engage and manage several projects at various stages of development from land prospecting through initial operations
  • Experience performing power flow simulations with power flow software: PSS/E, PowerWorld, PSLF and/or TARA
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to manage efficient team interactions with multiple disciplines all focused on the shared goal of developing solar and energy storage projects from concept to reality over a development period of several years
  • Good working knowledge of one or more of the following markets a plus: PJM, MISO, SPP, NYISO, ISONE or CAISO
  • Thorough knowledge of FERC transmission tariffs, interconnection processes, and NERC standards a plus
